The dimension is the easy part. 600 by 240 is written down in a dozen places, and any resizer will hit it. What decides whether the banner looks deliberate or accidental is what Discord draws on top of it — and that is not written down anywhere useful.

Your profile picture is rendered as a circle overlapping the banner's lower-left corner, roughly 22% of the banner's width across and extending below its edge. Immediately to its right sit your display name, your username and any badges. Between them they cover the bottom-left third of a 600 by 240 frame, and anything placed there is simply not read.

Composing for an overlap rather than around it

The instinct is to leave the lower left empty, and that produces a banner that looks unbalanced whenever the avatar is not rendered — in a search result, in a preview card, in a screenshot. The better approach is a background that carries no single focal point: a gradient, a texture, a repeating pattern, a photograph with its subject upper-right.

If the banner has to carry a logo or a handle, put it in the upper right and size it to be legible at 600 pixels wide. A banner is small. Text that reads comfortably in a 2000-pixel design file is often unreadable at the size it is actually displayed.

Uploading larger than 600 by 240

A larger source at the same 5:2 ratio is fine and often better: 1200 by 480 or 1800 by 720 gives Discord clean pixels to downscale from on a high-density screen, and the result is sharper than a 600-pixel image scaled up by the browser.

Which format to export

Choose by what the artwork is, not by habit. Flat colour, lettering and sharp edges keep their crispness in PNG and grow visible halos in JPEG. A photograph or a painted illustration is several times smaller as a JPEG with no visible difference at this size. WebP does both well and is accepted; keep a PNG or JPEG copy if the file might be reused elsewhere.

Why does my text look blurry on the banner?

Usually because it was sized in a large design file and never checked at 600 pixels wide. Type that is comfortable at 2000 pixels can fall below legibility when the same image is displayed at under a third of that. Export at the real size, look at it, and increase the type until it reads there.

Does Discord compress the banner after I upload it?

Discord re-encodes uploads for delivery, so a very heavy file buys nothing and a badly compressed one can look worse after its second pass. Exporting a clean PNG for flat artwork, or a high-quality JPEG for a photograph, gives the re-encoder the best material to work from.

Can I use the same file for my server banner?
