The profile banner is the wide strip behind a channel's name and avatar, and 1200 by 480 is the size Twitch expects. It is a 5:2 letterbox — the same ratio as a Discord profile banner and a completely different size, which is why files get reused between them and come back cropped.

Two things eat into it. The avatar and channel name sit over its left portion, and the visible height of the strip changes with the browser window: on a narrow window the banner is cropped vertically rather than scaled, so the top and bottom of your artwork are the first casualties.

This page holds the 1200 by 480 frame, marks the region the header covers, and exports the exact file. Nothing is uploaded, which is worth knowing when the banner is a commission that has not gone live yet.

Designing around the header overlap

The avatar circle and the channel name occupy the left portion of the banner, and the follow and subscribe buttons sit to the right of them. What remains reliably visible is the upper and right area — which is where a logo, a schedule or a tagline belongs.

The dashed rectangle on the preview marks that region. Treat everything outside it as texture: a gradient, a pattern, a photograph with no subject in the lower left. A banner that depends on its left side reads as broken on every screen that renders the header.

Why the top and bottom vanish on narrow windows

Twitch renders the banner to fill the header's width. As the window narrows, the strip stays as wide as the window and is cropped vertically rather than shrunk, so the effective visible band is shorter than 480 pixels at small widths.

Keep anything important within the vertical middle of the frame. A tagline sitting 40 pixels from the top edge is gone on a laptop window, and there is no warning that it happened.

Format, weight and what Twitch does after upload

JPEG for photographic or painted banners — far smaller than PNG at the same visible quality across a 1200-pixel strip. PNG for flat colour, hard edges and lettering, where JPEG's ringing is visible around every letter. Twitch re-encodes what it receives for delivery, so a clean, high-quality source gives its encoder the best material rather than compounding two rounds of loss.

You can, provided the ratio stays 5:2 — 2400 by 960 downscales cleanly and looks sharper on a high-density display. What does not help is a larger file at a different shape, which simply gives Twitch more to crop away from the wrong places.

JPEG or PNG for a Twitch banner?

JPEG if the artwork is photographic or painted, where it is several times smaller with no visible difference at this size. PNG if it has flat colour, hard edges or text, where JPEG's ringing shows up around every letter. WebP does both well if you do not need to hand the file to anyone else.
