A profile picture on Discord is stored as a square and rendered as a circle, and that one sentence explains most of what goes wrong with them. The corners of your square are cut away — about 21% of the area — and anything you positioned there is gone, including the edge of a logo, the top of a head or a signature in the lower right.

The size question is simpler than people expect. Discord renders avatars at many sizes, from a 16-pixel dot beside a message to a large circle on a profile card, and it generates those from whatever you upload. Supplying 512 by 512 gives it clean material for every one of them without wasting bytes on resolution nothing displays.

This page crops to a square with the circular mask drawn on top, so the composition you approve is the composition Discord shows. It runs entirely in your browser — a profile picture is a photograph of you often enough that this is worth stating plainly.

For a square crop at a size Discord does not dictate, the Crop Image tool takes any rectangle you type.

If the photograph came straight off a phone, it may still carry the location it was taken at — strip its metadata first.

Designing for a circle, not a square

The mask is a circle inscribed in your square, so the four corners are removed entirely and the pixels near the edge midpoints are the last to survive. Centre the subject and leave a margin: a face cropped tight to a square loses its ears and the top of its head once the mask is applied.

The preview above shows the mask while you position the crop. Use the focal-point grid to move the subject rather than re-cropping in another tool and guessing.

Corners are always removed — never put a logo, a date or a watermark there.
Leave roughly 10% margin around a face or a mark so the mask has something to cut into.
Test the silhouette: at 32 pixels an avatar is a shape and a colour, nothing more.

Why 512 by 512 rather than something larger

Discord derives every displayed size from the file you upload, and the largest of those is well under 512 pixels in normal use. Supplying a 2048-pixel avatar does not make the 40-pixel version sharper; it makes the upload heavier and gives the re-encoder more to throw away.

512 is comfortably above every rendered size, including on high-density displays, and leaves the file small. If your source is smaller than 512 the tool says so rather than enlarging silently — upscaling a 200-pixel image to 512 invents nothing and softens everything.

PNG or JPEG for an avatar

PNG if the avatar has flat colour, a hard outline or any transparency you want preserved against Discord's dark background. JPEG if it is a photograph, where it is far smaller at the same visible quality. Avoid a JPEG of flat artwork: the ringing around a hard edge is at its most visible on a small circle against a dark ground.

Can a Discord avatar have a transparent background?

Yes, if you export PNG or WebP rather than JPEG. Transparent areas show the surrounding interface colour, which differs between light and dark themes — worth checking both, because a dark logo that looks sharp on dark mode can disappear entirely on light.

Does my picture get uploaded to this site to be cropped?

No. The crop and the export happen in your browser, and this site has no upload endpoint to receive a file even if the code tried. For a photograph of yourself that is not a small distinction, and it is checkable in the Network panel rather than something you have to believe.

Why does my avatar look fine large and unreadable small?

Because a 40-pixel circle in a message list carries a silhouette and a dominant colour, and nothing else. Detail, thin lines and lettering all vanish. Design for the small size first — one strong shape with high contrast — and the large one takes care of itself.

Can I upload an animated avatar?

Animated avatars need a GIF and have historically been a Nitro feature. This tool produces still images, which is what a free account can set and what most people want. It will still give you the exact square frame to build an animation from.
