The header on X is a 3:1 strip, 1500 by 500 pixels, sitting behind the top of a profile. It is one of the few social images whose ratio is genuinely wide, and one of the few where the platform's own interface takes a substantial bite out of it.

The profile picture overlaps the lower-left corner as a circle. On a phone the profile card slides up over the bottom of the header as well, so the usable band is shorter than 500 pixels suggests. Between them, the bottom-left quadrant is unreliable.

What the interface covers

Two overlaps, and the mobile one catches people out because it does not exist on desktop.

The avatar circle sits over the lower-left corner on every layout. On a phone the profile card — name, handle, bio, follower counts — is drawn higher, taking a band off the bottom of the header that a desktop browser leaves visible.

Designing a 3:1 strip

Three to one is wide enough that most photographs need a deliberate crop rather than a centred one. Landscape scenery, a repeating pattern or a wordmark with space around it all suit the shape; a portrait photograph does not.

Text on a header is rarely worth it. The strip is rendered a few hundred pixels wide on a phone, and the bio directly beneath it already carries whatever the text would have said, in a font the platform controls and a size that is always legible.

Format and file size

JPEG for photographic headers, PNG for flat colour and lettering. X re-encodes uploads for delivery and enforces its own file size limit, so a clean high-quality source is better than a maximal one — supplying something already heavily compressed just stacks two rounds of artefacts.

Usually not. The profile card immediately below already shows both, in a typeface the platform controls at a size that is always readable. Repeating them on the strip uses the only space you have to say something the reader can already see.

Why do the edges of my header get cropped?

The header fills the width of the profile column, so on a narrow window it is scaled to that width and the extreme left and right can fall outside. Keep the composition central and treat the outer edges as bleed rather than as content.

Is my header uploaded when I crop it here?

No. The crop and the export run entirely in this browser tab and there is no server on this site to receive an image. You upload the result to X yourself, and the Network panel stays empty while this page does its work.
