Etsy Shop Icon 500×500

An Etsy shop icon is a 500 by 500 pixel square displayed as a circle beside your shop name. Crop it here with the circular mask drawn over the preview, so a logo's edges are not quietly clipped the moment it goes live.

Etsy Shop Icon 500×500 explained

The shop icon is the small round image next to your shop name — on the storefront, in search results, beside every review and in a buyer's purchase history. It is uploaded as a 500 by 500 square and rendered as a circle.

It is also the image a returning buyer recognises. A banner is seen once per visit; the icon follows the shop everywhere, usually at a size where only a shape and a colour survive. That makes recognisability, not detail, the thing worth optimising.

This page crops to the exact square with the circular mask drawn over it, so the corners the mask removes are visible while you position the artwork. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

The wide strip above your listings is a separate image — the shop banner resizer exports it at both densities.

If the logo arrived in a format the browser will not open, the format converter gets it into PNG first.

The icon against the rest of the shop

The icon is small, round and everywhere; the banner is large, wide and seen once. They are not variants of the same artwork.

What survives the circle

A circle inscribed in a square shows about 79% of it, so the four corners are removed entirely. A square logo that fills its canvas loses its corners; a wordmark that runs edge to edge loses its first and last letters.

Centre the mark and leave margin. If the brand is a wordmark rather than a symbol, consider using a monogram or the initial for the icon and keeping the full wordmark for the banner — that is what most shops with long names end up doing.

  • Corners are always removed; nothing meaningful belongs there.
  • A wordmark longer than about six characters rarely reads in a circle.
  • High contrast, because the icon is rendered small beside text.
  • Avoid thin outlines, which disappear at review-list size.

Why 500 by 500 rather than something larger

Etsy documents 500 by 500 for this slot and derives the smaller renderings from it. Supplying substantially more does not sharpen the small sizes — they are resampled either way — and a heavier file gives the re-encoder more to discard.

If your source is smaller than 500 pixels the page says so rather than enlarging silently. Upscaling a 200-pixel logo to 500 adds no detail and softens the edges that made it legible.

Format and background

PNG for a logo with flat colour or hard edges, and for anything with transparency. JPEG for a photographic icon, though photographs rarely make good shop icons at this size. If you export a transparent PNG, check how it looks against a white page — Etsy's storefront is light, so a white logo on transparency disappears entirely.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Etsy shop icon?

500 by 500 pixels, square on upload and circular on display. Etsy generates the smaller renderings used in search results and review lists from that one file, so 500 is enough and more is not sharper anywhere it is shown.

Why is my logo cut off in the shop icon?

It is masked rather than cut: the icon is displayed as a circle inscribed in your square, which removes roughly a fifth of the area at the corners. A logo that fills its canvas edge to edge loses those edges. Centre it and leave margin.

Can I use my shop name as the icon?

Only if it is short. A circle shows about six characters legibly at the size the icon is normally rendered; longer names become an illegible smear. Most shops with long names use a monogram or initial for the icon and keep the full wordmark on the banner.

Should the icon have a transparent background?

You can, but check it against white first. Etsy's pages are light, so a white or very pale logo on a transparent background vanishes. A solid background colour taken from your brand palette is usually the safer and more recognisable choice.

Does the icon need to match my banner?

It needs to be consistent, not identical. Use the same palette and the same typeface, but design the icon as a mark in its own right — a banner cropped down to a circle almost never reads, because banners are composed wide and icons are read small.

Is my logo uploaded when I crop it here?

No. The crop and the export run in your browser with no server involved, and this site has no endpoint to receive an image. You upload the result to Etsy yourself afterwards, from your own machine.
