Etsy Banner Resizer

An Etsy big banner is 1200 by 300 pixels, and a 3360 by 840 version at the same 4:1 ratio keeps it sharp on high-density screens. Crop once here and both are exported together, without the artwork leaving your browser.

Etsy Banner Resizer explained

Etsy's shop banner sits across the top of your storefront, and the documented size is 1200 by 300 — a 4:1 strip. That number has been correct for years and is now only half the story: on a laptop or phone with a high-density display, a 1200-pixel image stretched across the banner slot is visibly soft.

The fix is to supply more pixels at the same ratio. 3360 by 840 is the widely used retina figure, and because it is exactly 2.8 times 1200 by 300, the same crop serves both without a second decision.

So this page exports the pair. One crop, two files, both at 4:1, both produced on your own machine — which matters for a shop's brand artwork you have not launched yet.

If your shop uses the slimmer banner instead, the mini banner resizer holds the 7.5:1 strip.

A 3360-pixel export can be heavy — the Compress Image tool will bring it down to a size you name.

The Etsy shop image set

A storefront uses several images and they are all different shapes. Getting the banner right is the visible half; the icon is the half people remember.

Why 4:1 is harder than it looks

Four to one is much wider than any camera produces. A landscape photograph is 3:2 or 16:9, so fitting one into a banner means discarding most of its height — roughly 60% of a 3:2 frame.

Photographs of products rarely survive that. What works is artwork composed for the strip: a repeating pattern, a flat-lay shot taken specifically wide, a wordmark with generous space around it, or a colour field with the product at one end. Choose the crop deliberately using the focal grid rather than letting a centre crop take whatever happens to be in the middle.

What to put on a shop banner

A banner is not a billboard and it is not a place for a paragraph. On a phone it is rendered a few hundred pixels wide, so the realistic payload is a wordmark, a short tagline, or nothing at all beyond a well-chosen image.

Seasonal banners are worth the effort precisely because they are cheap to swap: the same crop, different artwork, both sizes exported in one step.

  • A wordmark or shop name, sized to read at a few hundred pixels wide.
  • At most one short line of supporting text.
  • No small print, no URLs, no discount codes in tiny type.
  • A colour that matches the shop's product photography rather than fighting it.

Format and file size

JPEG for photographic banners — at 3360 pixels wide, a PNG of the same image is several times larger with no visible advantage. PNG for flat colour and lettering, where JPEG's artefacts gather around every edge. Etsy re-encodes what it receives, so supply a clean, high-quality source rather than something already compressed twice.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Etsy shop banner?

1200 by 300 pixels for the big banner, a 4:1 strip. A 3360 by 840 version at the same ratio is what keeps it crisp on high-density screens, and this page exports both from a single crop so the pair cannot drift apart.

Why does my Etsy banner look blurry?

Almost always because it is a 1200-pixel image being displayed on a screen with two or three device pixels per CSS pixel. The browser upscales it and the result is soft. Supplying 3360 by 840 at the same ratio gives it real pixels to draw from.

Can I use a product photo as a banner?

Only if you crop it deliberately. A 4:1 strip keeps about 40% of the height of an ordinary 3:2 photograph, so a centre crop usually takes a band across the middle of the subject. Use the focal grid to choose what stays, or shoot something composed for the width.

How much text should a banner carry?

A shop name and at most one short line. On a phone the banner is rendered a few hundred pixels wide, which makes anything below headline size unreadable. Discount codes and URLs in small type are the most commonly wasted pixels on Etsy.

What is the difference between the big and mini banner?

Height and therefore ratio. The big banner is 1200 by 300 at 4:1; the mini banner is 1200 by 160 at 7.5:1, roughly half the height. They are separate slots with separate crops — a big banner squeezed into the mini slot loses its middle.

Is my banner uploaded to this site to be resized?

No. The crop, both resizes and the encoding happen in your browser, and the site has no endpoint that could receive the file. For unlaunched shop branding that is a meaningful difference, and it is visible in the Network panel rather than merely stated.
