A Canvas is the short looping visual that plays behind a track in the Spotify mobile app. It is vertical — 1080 by 1920, a 9:16 portrait frame — and it is a video: a few seconds long, silent, looping seamlessly.

Which means no image tool produces a finished Canvas, and any page claiming otherwise is misleading you. What an image tool can do, and what artists actually need first, is the source frame: cover art or a photograph cropped to the exact vertical frame, with the regions the player covers already accounted for.

Why cover art rarely crops to 9:16

Album art is square. Cropping a square to 9:16 keeps a narrow vertical band through its middle and discards both sides — about 44% of the width.

For most covers that is fatal: a centred subject survives, a composed layout does not, and a wordmark across the width is cut at both ends. What works better is either a detail from the artwork, enlarged with the zoom control, or a separate vertical photograph shot for the purpose with the same palette.

What the player covers

The track title and artist sit over the lower part of the frame, with the progress bar and transport controls below them. The upper portion carries the now-playing header.

The dashed rectangle marks the band that stays clear. As with a music video, the frame should read as atmosphere rather than as a poster — a Canvas carrying text competes with the track title drawn on top of it and loses.

Preparing the frame for animation

Export a PNG when the next step is compositing, since it preserves exact colour with no compression artefacts to amplify once the loop is rendered. Export JPEG if the frame is simply a reference.

A seamless loop is easier to build from a frame that has no strong directional motion implied in it — a still with an obvious left-to-right sweep tends to produce a loop with a visible jump. Flat, textural or slowly cycling imagery loops most cleanly.
